Hello and welcome to our new website, featuring the Mother Hubbard's Cupboards brand of country kitchens and furniture. My name is Rick Hopper, and I'm pleased that you decided to check us out. The success of this unique line has led us to dedicate a site exclusively to this brand, manufactured by Country Woodworkers Ltd in Powell River, British Columbia. We have lots to add in the coming months, which will educate you about both our product line and country kitchens, as well as furniture in general.
If you're renovating or building new, and you're interested in our "look" in your home, cottage, cabin or business - we'll help guide you every step of the way. We'll design, build and install for you a timeless country kitchen, or build Mother Hubbard's Cupboards furniture for any room you have, so that you are left with something you will cherish forever. Our Mother Hubbard's brand of country kitchens and furniture is built to last generations and will add warmth, character, functionality and value to your home.

Country Woodworkers is a business I founded 12 years ago shortly after I completed three years as a head coach and general manager for a team in the Western Hockey League (there's nothing more Canadian than hockey and country kitchens!). I was more than happy to trade my skates and whistle for a saw and hammer and return to my roots as a cabinet maker in 1993. I'm very proud of how Country Woodworkers has grown into a respected, high quality value-added manufacturer with a customer base that stretches across North America. We employ a total of 19 people out of our 6,000 sq. foot shop in the beautiful countryside in Powell River, the jewel of the Sunshine Coast.
Since I was a young boy, as you can tell from this picture of me back in 1961, I've always had a passion for woodworking which also grew into a passion for design (I also had a love for hockey, of course, but over time I came to the realization I was much better at designing and crafting a kitchen than a new power play strategy!) When I was a youngster, I had a wonderful grandma who lived in a beautiful farm house in rural Ontario and made the best apple pie I ever tasted, even to this day. The nostalgia of all that, remembering my grandma in her apron working in the kitchen, is what inspired me to come up with "Mother Hubbard's Cupboards". Of course it's also a famous nursery rhyme. So I had a vision and I pursued it.

Our relationship with Costco has evolved and currently we are conducting successful "road show" special events at various Costco warehouses in Alberta and British Columbia. We look forward to the possibility of an expanded presence with Costco throughout western Canada and the western United States in the year ahead, but only if we can do so in a manageable fashion as we will never put sales volume ahead of quality and customer service which we are renowned for. We have also now partnered with Elmira Stove Works and we are offering their incredible line of vintage-style appliances with 21st century technology - an excellent fit with Mother Hubbard's kitchens and furniture.
Our brand of country-style kitchens and furniture has become very popular and our business in this small West Coast town has become the little engine that could. With help from grandma! We've also created the modern day version of Mother Hubbard. She has incredible cupboards, as in the nursery rhyme, but her cupboards are not bare - she's an avid Costco shopper - and she has a country rooster to along with her country dog.

Nothing gives me more satisfaction than a happy customer whose home and lifestyle are enhanced with a country kitchen built to last generations. If you like our "look", we custom build to your exact size and feature specifications. A lot of details are put into our finished product to keep the look rustic and authentic such as old fashioned square cut nails, wood knobs, solid beaded backs, plate grooves on shelves…the list goes on. But we also use the very latest high-quality hardware to ensure that we provide all the conveniences of a modern kitchen.

Mother Hubbard's Cupboards furniture is made from solid wood that we have cut and dried locally from the surrounding forest. A lot of manufacturers advertise the use of solid wood where in fact the majority of furniture is made of particle board with some trim work from solid wood. We handcraft every piece, one at a time. The finishing process is a critical step in making the difference between something "nice" and "beautiful". Every Mother Hubbard's piece is hand sanded, stained, hand painted, sanded and stained again, and finished with three coats of lacquer. It's a laborious process but makes all the difference in the world to the end product, and customers recognize the difference when they see and feel their Mother Hubbard's Cupboards kitchen and furniture.

We look forward to serving you and bringing Mother Hubbard's Cupboards into your home!

Sincerely,
Rick Hopper
